Cutting my son's hair
Every two weeks…
I get the great pleasure of cutting my son’s hair. I’ve been doing this since he turned two and get a huge kick out of doing it. I have zero experience barbering so the first 5-10 haircuts were actually… bad. But after watching some youtube videos and having a willing subject to practice, I think i’m finally getting to the point where it looks half-decent. He’s still super proud of the fact that he can tell his friends that Mommy cut his hair, so I’m going to milk it as long as it last!
I went through quite a bunch of YouTube tutorials before I settled on what would work for me. I tackle the sides and back with an easy clipper fade and I do the top and front with a scissor trick. No partitions needed!
Clipper fade from 2 -> 4 - > blend with 3. This is the YouTube tutorial I follow.
Scissor cut the sides, top and front using this easy technique and to make it completely dummy proof get the combpal guides, especially if you are worried about messing up the bangs. (If your kids are afraid of clippers you can use combpal throughout too!)
Practice, practice, practice. The first cut isn’t going to be great. I’ll just tell you that right now. By by the fifth, it’ll be a HUGE difference.
Remington Cordless Vacuum Kit - I love this because it minimizes the mess from cutting his hair. Most the hair is vacuumed into the canister WHILE being cut!
Wahl Peanut Classic Clipper/Trimmer - When I get down to cleaning up the edges and getting clean lines, I switch over to the Wahl Peanut. It is tiny so it works great for kids heads!
I use professional shears for working on the bangs on layers. Nothing fancy with these shears but they work fine for it's price.
This neck duster is key for when the cut is done.
And lastly, a kids's size cape for their tiny necks.
And here’s a fun time-lapse video of his haircut…
